Inurnment, with military honors, will follow the service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. After the committal service, lunch will be served in the church hall.

The funeral service will be live-streamed through a link on the funeral home’s website in Jerry’s funeral service panel. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield (www.hykefuneralhome.com).

Jerry was born on May 15, 1933, in Redfield to Chauncey and Blanche (Ames) Brand. He grew up on a farm just outside of Redfield and attended a rural country school. During this time, he worked alongside his father and for neighboring farmers, developing a lifelong dedication to hard work – a quality many admired in him.

In May of 1953, Jerry met Virgie Reihe. He would often say he knew the moment he saw her; she was the one. They were married within the year on November 1, 1953, in Lead, SD. This was a start to a beautiful love story whose foundation was built on family, partnership, loyalty, and devotion. They stayed true to their vows, and in November of 2025, they celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Jerry would often say that marrying Virgie was “the best thing that ever happened to him!”—a truth that those closest to them could testify to.

Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Army after being drafted in 1954. After his service, he dedicated 43 years of his life working for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. He took pride in working with his hands and providing for his family. He led by example with his strong work ethic and dedication – inspiring those closest to him.

Family was Jerry’s greatest joy, above all. He and Virgie were so proud of the four generations that stemmed from their love. Nothing was more valuable to him than time spent with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Whether it was sharing stories, making you laugh, or lending a helping hand. He was never without a smile when he was with his family.

In his quieter moments, Jerry found happiness in restoring old vehicles, fishing, and tending to his garden. He took pride in constructing multiple homes for his family, including the home he resided in at the end of his life.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Virgie of Redfield; three daughters, Debra (Darrell) Hartman, Barbara (Darrell) Dickhaut, Peggy (Jim) Haider, all of Redfield, and one son,  Douglas (Cindy) Brand of Palmdale, CA; eleven grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister, and one great-granddaughter.

Jerry will be remembered for his steady presence, always thinking of others before himself, and the deep, enduring love he had for his family. He leaves behind not just memories, but a legacy of kindness and hard work that will continue through generations. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
