Wolves Play Longball In Magic City

Minot, ND (NSUWolves.com) – Wolves baseball was back on the road Wednesday to take on the Beavers of Minot State in a midweek double-header. Northern split the series with a one-run loss in extra innings in the first game then a blowout win in the second game.

GAME ONE: NSU 3, MSU 4

  • Kyle Konechne led off for the Wolves with a walk; he stole second to get into scoring position
  • A single to left field by Drew Benson brought Konechne home; Benson was later tagged out at home to end the inning with NSU up 1-0
  • Maddox Plack and the defense handled business in the bottom of the first and second innings, giving up only one hit in each and zero runs
  • Benson got his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to get Dalton Kesti across the plate
  • The Beavers tied things up in the third on a two-run home run by Vinnie Gates; they captured the lead in the fourth on a Mike Williamson homer
  • Evening the score again in the sixth was Dillon Castellanos with a solo home run
  • All tied up after seven took the game into extra innings; Northern left one on base in the eighth
  • Minot walked it off with an RBI single from Gates to end the game 4-3

GAME TWO: NSU 14, MSU 10

  • The Wolves set the tone early with three hits to start the game; Dalton Kesti and Dillon Castellanos singled to get on base while a Drew Benson single brought them home
  • Benson scored on the following play, a Collin Lott groundout; Wolves up 3-0 after the top of the first
  • Six runs were added by Northern in the second to stretch the lead to 9-0; five of the runs were scored on two outs
    • A sacrifice fly by Kesti scored Easton Rerick
    • Castellanos homered and brought in Mateo Tahsini with him
    • Lott batted in Benson for the second time this game
    • A two-run home run from Casey Vining had Lott touching home
  • Minot got on the board with a second inning home run
  • NSU responded with a score of their own; Kesti doubled to get into scoring position and Castellanos batted him home on a double, all on two outs
  • The Beavers put up another run in the bottom of the third; Wolves on top 10-2
  • Easton Rerick hit a three-run bomb, scoring Lott and Vining
  • Five Minot runs were scored in the fifth from a standalone home run and a grand slam
  • Northern went three up, three down in the sixth, bringing Minot back to the plate; they scored on a sac fly to make the game 13-8 NSU
  • Kesti came home on a Benson single with two outs in the top of the seventh, rounding out the Wolves’ scoring
  • In desperation mode, MSU added two runs to their score, falling to NSU 14-10
