SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- It is now the number one killer of people between the ages of 14 and 45.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed by fentanyl.

Angela Kennecke’s daughter Emily was among those victims six years ago.

It’s a conversation parents need to have with their kids.

That’s part of the message from Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum on national Fentanyl Awareness Day.

Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead says fentanyl is pouring over the border at a record pace, with deadly results.

One of those victims was Jenny and Jim Orr’s 15-year old daughtr Kelsey, who died just before Christmas.

Fentanyl is now the number one killer of people between the ages of 14 and 45.
