Janice Thurn, 81

The memorial service for Janice Jean Thurn, 81, of Apache Junction, AZ, formerly of Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:30am, Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastor Leland Armbright officiating. Inurnment will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Eureka, SD. Jan passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024, at her home in Apache Junction, AZ, while under hospice care.

Jan was born September 20,1942 to Otto and Ella (Opp) Schnabel in Eureka, SD. She attended a one-room schoolhouse through 8th grade before graduating from Eureka High School in 1960. Jan married Rodney Thurn, her husband of 62 years, on June 4th,1961 in Eureka. After high school, she attended Aberdeen School of Commerce and was later employed by Dahme Construction, State Farm Insurance Agent Jim Gederos, and the Sewing Shoppe in Aberdeen, SD, in addition to being a stay-at-home mom for many years.

 

Following retirement, Jan spent winters in Arizona where she loved the warm Arizona sun before permanently moving to Apache Junction until her death. She enjoyed following her grandkids’ activities, reading books, putting puzzles together, playing and organizing card games.

 

Jan was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Natalie Wiedrick; brother, Wilbert Schnabel; and brothers-in-law, Norman Buechler and Mervin Gab.

 

She is survived by her husband, Rod; daughter, Dawn Rieger (Mike) of Kent, WA; son, Chad Thurn (Angie) of Omro, WI; son-in law, Dale Wiedrick of Aberdeen, SD; grandchildren, Tarah Heupel (Jordan), AJ Jahnig (Laura), Jessica, Katie and Zachary Rieger, Celia and Nolan Thurn; and great grandchildren, Della, Alma and Jack Heupel. She is also survived by her sisters, Arlene Buechler (Norman) and Marcella Gab (Mervin), along with several nieces and nephews.
