NSU Drops Two To CSP in Twin Cities

SAINT PAUL, MINN (NSUWolves.com) – The NSU baseball team hit the road to play a double-header against the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears Sunday. The Wolves dropped a close first game while game two of the day went into extra innings.

GAME ONE: NSU 5, CSP 6

  • The Golden Bears struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead
  • All five of Northern State’s runs came in the third and were all on home runs
    • Kyle Konechne led off the inning and homered to center right to kick off the scoring for the Wolves and tie the game 1-1
    • At the next at bat, Jonah Schmidt sent one over the fence in left field to capture Northern’s lead
    • After two outs and two batters reaching bases, Drew Benson stepped up to the plate; he hit a home run to bring in Collin Lott and Mateo Tahsini, NSU on top 5-1
  • Concordia put up two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth while holding Northern scoreless in the last four innings to walk away with the 6-5 win

GAME TWO: NSU 6, CSP 7

  • The Wolves started off slowly, putting up zeroes in the first five innings; conversely, the Golden Bears put up runs in four of the first five innings to go ahead 6-0
  • Northern State stormed back in the sixth, scoring five runs to cut their deficit to one
    • Mateo Tahsini touched home on a Dalton Kesti single to get the Wolves on the board
    • With bases loaded, Collin Lott stepped up to the plate; he hit a grand slam to right center field (Dillon CastellanosDalton Kesti, Vining, and Lott all scored)
  • Another Northern run in the eighth tied the game up at 6 apiece; Casey Vining homered as the lead-off batter
  • The next (and winning) run of the game wasn’t until the bottom of the 14th inning when CSP’s Gus Berger was walked with bases loaded, bringing Jack Setterlund home
  • Since scoring their final run in the eighth inning, NSU left eight runners on base
