Carl J. Block, 98, of Webster, passed away, Saturday April 4, 2026, at Bethesda Home in Webster.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am, Friday, April 10, 2026, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Webster. Inurnment will be at St. Otto’s Catholic Cemetery, Webster.
Memorial visitation will be 5-7pm closing with a 7pm wake service, Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the church.
Carl was born to Joseph M. and Mary (Lewno) Block on January 23, 1928, on the family farm east of Grenville, South Dakota. He was educated at Grenville Catholic School for first and second grade and later grades in a one room country school that was moved off from land that was going to become the Waubay National Wildlife Refuge. In 1945, Carl graduated from St. Joseph’s High School. Carl decided to continue to help his parents on the farm.
On October 16, 1951, Carl married Doris Stromseth. They purchased the “Block” family farm from Carl’s parents located east of Grenville, South Dakota. Doris and Carl eventually started a dairy business, which expanded into selling hay and alfalfa seed. Carl enjoyed the peace and quiet of the rolling hills while gardening.
They lived on the farm for 70 years where they raised their family of ten children. Throughout these years, they were especially grateful for the trust of people and businesses they encountered. Carl and Doris lived their belief by ensuring anyone who came to the farm was welcomed to a meal and friendship. “I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was thirsty, and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me. “Matthew 25:35.
In 2019, they moved to Webster, South Dakota during the winter months. In 2021, they began living there full-time.
Carl was known for his integrity and ability to repair things. He delighted in his ability to recall the past.
Carl was currently a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for 93 years. He received Baptism, Communion, Confirmation, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He was on the parish council for many years. He was a Catholic Forester since 1944. Carl will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew him. Those whom he leaves behind to cherish his memory are as follows:

(Stromseth) Block, Daughters and Sons: Kenneth Block (Terri) of Vonore, Tennessee; Audrey Block of Aberdeen, South Dakota; Ronald Block (Nancy) of Webster, South Dakota; Joyce Block Gix (Bob Gix) of Cashmere, Washington; Sandra Block-Hansen (Lester Hansen) of Veblen, South Dakota; Keith Block(Lori Wilkinson) of Wilmot, South Dakota; Douglas Block (Elaine) of Waubay, South Dakota; Charles Block (Linda Knutt-Block) of Long Beach, California. All of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Block; son Larry Block; daughter Mary Block (in infancy), Sisters and brothers-in-law: Angela and (Art) Nicolay; Sylvia and Jerome Dolney; Helen and (Norbert) Stromseth.; Amelia (Clifford) Murschel; Agnes (in infancy)
