Wolves Take Three of Four At Aberdeen Dome

ABERDEEN, SD (NSUWolves.com) [FRI] – Northern State killed their ten-game losing streak after taking down the Golden Eagles in both games of today’s doubleheader (3-2 and 9-3).

GAME ONE: NORTHERN STATE 3, MINNESOTA CROOKSTON 2

  • After Minnesota Crookston tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Corina Coppersmith, the go-ahead runner at third, scored on a throwing error to give the Wolves the lead and their first win since March 15.
  • In the game, NSU notched three runs, seven hits, two RBIs, two home runs, a double, one error, 21 putouts, five assists and six strikeouts on the mound
  • After two scoreless innings, Aune Boben stepped up to the plate with two down in the third and sent one flying over the right-field fence to give Northern State the opening lead
  • Mckenzie Wanner followed in Boben’s footsteps two innings later with another solo shot to extend NSU’s narrow lead
  • The Golden Eagles fired back quickly in the next half-inning
  • With runners on second and third, Emily Kalina sent the ball deep into left-center to bring in two runners and tie the game
  • Coppersmith was the final score change of the game, recording a run on an error, which gave the Wolves their ninth win of the season

  • NSU’s momentum carried into game two, recording nine runs, six hits, seven RBIs, one double, 21 putouts, seven assists and eight strikeouts on the mound
  • After a scoreless first, Northern started out the second with two runners on base before a Dessa Bryant single brought them around the bags for two
  • Similar to the second, the Wolves collected two more runs in the third, this time with Madi Jones scoring on a bases-loaded walk and Tevan Bryant scoring after a wild pitch was sent beyond the playing field
  • Rayna Frech recorded a triple in the bottom of the third to bring in two runs with one out down
  • Boben and the Wolves’ defense clutched up in the field, tallying a strikeout and a popout to keep Frech stranded on third
  • Jones would score another run in the fourth to put the Wolves up three
  • With Kennedy Boyer at the plate, the outfielder sent a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to advance Dessa Bryant to second and Hailey Cota to third just in time for freshman shortstop Alicia Jeanson to record a two-run double, sending both teammates in
  • After advancing to third on a passed ball, Jeanson made her way home courtesy of Boben, who grounded out to second
  • Sydney Anderson chalked the final run of the afternoon on a Cota RBI single to center to jump the Wolves to 9-3 and tally their first doubleheader victory since February

GAME ONE: NORTHERN STATE 6, MINNESOTA STATE MOORHEAD 5

  • After allowing five runs in just two innings, the Wolves rallied through the next five innings, scoring six and allowing zero to win game one in comeback fashion
  • In the win, Northern State notched six runs, 11 hits, six RBIs, one home run, two doubles, 21 putouts, six assists and two strikeouts from the rubber
  • After four batters faced at the top of the first, the Dragons got on the board twice in the first after recording back-to-back outs at the top of the inning
  • With freshman Riley McKeever on third and Courtney Locke on second, Kayla Roidt sent one into center for an RBI single, bringing McKeever home and advancing Locke to third
  • Andrea Garcia followed it up with an RBI single of her own in the following at-bat
  • With the bases loaded, Locke sent a shot into left-center which brought in three runs to take a quick 5-0 lead in the second
  • The Wolves recorded their first run of the day in the third with Tevan Bryant securing an RBI double, bringing Alicia Jeanson home from second base
  • With Shayla Warak on the bases for Tevan Bryant, a Corina Coppersmith single was enough to get Warak home and bring life into the Wolves
  • Tevan Bryant would touch the bases again in the fifth, this time on a solo shot to right-center to bring the game within two
  • With three outs to score two runs, Coppersmith started the inning on first due to a walk, with Dessa Bryant chalking a single to advance Coppersmith to second
  • Kennedy Boyer fought at the plate to load the bases via a walk before Jeanson sent a sacrifice fly into center to bring Coppersmith home
  • Aune Boben was responsible for the lead change with a two-RBI double to bring both Dessa Bryant and Boyer home
  • After allowing a walk in the bottom of the inning, the Wolves held their ground, securing the six-run comeback and the win

  • A Sam Macchiaroli double brought Teagan Pranchke home for their first run in the fifth before Macchiaroli scored off a McKeever double
  • McKeever scored two at-bats later after Locke advanced her to third and Lexie Wilson hit a sacrifice fly into left field
  • Locke scored after a Lisa Garcia hit, with Garcia being the game-ending run after a single from Loie Moore.
