Obituary

Patricia “Pat” (Day) Johnson, who recently celebrated her 85th birthday, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Redfield Community Memorial Hospital on Thursday, December 30, 2021. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 3, 2022, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield, SD. Family will be present during this time to accept condolences. A prayer service, rosary led by the Catholic Daughters, and time of sharing will follow at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield.  Reverend John Short will officiate.  Following the funeral service, there will be a time of lunch and fellowship at the church.  Pat will be cremated after the service and inurnment will take place at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD at a later date.

Patricia was the daughter of Dean and Lucille (Vande Voorde) Day.  She was born in Mitchell on December 1, 1936, and grew up in Redfield, SD where she participated in National Honor Society, Band, Mixed Chorus, Girl’s Glee Club, FHA, and Keyettes.  She graduated from Redfield High School in 1954.  She earned her nursing degree at Presentation College in 1957.  Patricia married Clinton Albin Johnson of Doland, SD on September 2, 1957. Together they traveled many places with the United States Air Force while building their family of nine children.  Their travels took them to Alaska, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Texas, the Philippines, California, and South Dakota.  Patricia worked as a school nurse and later as a nurse in the James Valley Nursing Home and the Eastern Star Home in Redfield.  Patricia was active in the Catholic Daughters of America, American Cancer Society, Learn a Little Club, Bible studies, and Red Hat Society.  She volunteered to help with Catechism and other duties at St. Bernard Catholic Church. She was always happy helping others. She has been a living angel to many people. She loved traveling to visit her grandkids and going to their activities.

Patricia is preceded in death by her husband Clint Johnson; parents Dean and Lucille Day; brothers Dennis and Ronald; and sister-in-law Darlyce.  Patricia is survived by her children: Brent (Peg) Johnson of Brookings, SD, Brian (Erlinda) Johnson of Milpitas, CA, Wayne (Deena) Johnson of Fremont, NE, Harlan (Mary Senn) Johnson of Camp Douglas, WI, Cheryl (Michael) McIntyre of Jamestown, ND, Raymond (Lisa Wurnig) Johnson of Redfield, Mary (Albert) Zadlo of Ewa Beach, HI, Dennis Johnson of Gig Harbor, WA, and Paul Johnson of Fort Collins, CO; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Duane (Jean) Day and sisters: Sr. Mary Day, Francene (Terry) Woodhead, and Janet Day.
