ABERDEEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – The Aberdeen Smittys came out of the blocks a bit sluggish in game one, but rounded the bend & won the race in game two.

On senior night from Fossum Field, the Aberdeen Smittys & Pierre Post 8 squads couldn’t have played more different games from game one to game two. In the first game of the doubleheader, it was all Pierre, defeating the Smittys 14-3 & then in game two, the Smittys returned the favor & dominated Post 8, 11-1 in a five inning affair.

In game one, the Post 8 squad struck early & they struck often. Post 8 got off to a hot start and led 5-0 before the Smittys could grab a bat on offense. Pierre added two more in the third & four more in the fourth and led 10-0 before Aberdeen could scrape a run across the plate. The Smittys offense played well, they out-hit Pierre 11-10, but erred in the field six times to the Pierre squads’ zero. Joran Foss took the loss, going four innings and surrendering eight hits, 10 runs, seven of them earning and giving two free passes. On offense, Jaxon Ladner went 2-3 with a run scored & one run driven in.

After both teams retreated to their respective dugouts for hydration and to reset their lineup cards for game two, the Aberdeen Smittys came out with fire in their eyes on senior day. Karson Borge led off the second game with a single to start the momentum, Borge swiped second and a Jehiel Aviles walk (another double steal later), Borge found home plate on a passed ball by the catcher of Pierre; Aviles would eventually score on another throw in the dirt by the Pierre hurler, to lead 2-0.

After tacking on another run in the first and putting down Pierre in the top of the second, leadoff hitter Joe Cogley singled to right centerfield and that set the table for Karson Borge; Borge hit a flare single into center, Aviles walked & it was Jaxon Ladner up with the bases loaded and nobody out. Ladner, who was awarded the Bryce Anglin scholarship pregame, drilled an RBI single to give the Smittys a 4-0 lead. After a Joran Foss popout, Ridley Waldo legged out an infield single to drive in another. The carousel kept rolling as Lance Siefken drove in one more and the Pierre pitcher was pulled from the game & after two, it was 6-0 Smittys.

Aberdeen continued to do damage in the third, adding a run & then adding four more for good measure in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 11-0 lead. Pierre would avoid the shutout in the top of the 5th, but didn’t avoid the 10-run rule, losing 11-1.

On offense, Grant Beyer went 2-3 with a run scored & three runs driven in. Joe Cogley went 2-3 with a run scored and he plated a pair. The Smittys also got RBI’s from Jaxon Ladner, Ridley Waldo & Lance Siefken.

Bennett Eisenbeisz picked up the win. He went the complete game, five innings, scattered three hits, one earned run & he let his defense play behind him. The guys in the field registered zero errors and made plays for their knuckle-ball throwing lefty.

Postgame, Nathan Gonnelly commented on the movement & action Eisenbeisz was getting, “His knuckleball was so gross…I went out between innings & I told him to show it to me and I watched the label the entire time and that ball danced on me. I dropped it, too. That’s what you want in a knuckleball.”

The Smittys return the diamond on Monday after the 4th of July (mini-break) to take on the Renner Royals on the road.
