Herbert Stellmacher was born on June 28, 1927, on a farm northeast of Hitchcock, SD, to parents Reinhold and Sophie (Witte) Stellmacher.  He was baptized August 14, 1927, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Crandon.  He was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church on July 21, 1940.  He graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1944.  He married Shirley Schroeder on September 3, 1948 at her parent’s home near Hitchcock.

He and Shirley operated the family farm.  He enjoyed feeding cattle and hogs.  He also had horses which he liked to ride, and had a team to drive.  He combined grain for almost 60 years, doing custom combining for several neighbors.  They retired to Redfield in 1999.  There they enjoyed playing cards and helping at the Redfield Senior Center. Herb was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Redfield and served on several committees.  He served on the Cornwall, and then Crandon township boards for a total of 45 years.  Herb and Shirley traveled to Germany twice to visit relatives there.  He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and all the great-grandchildren, and loved their visits.

He is survived by his children:  Gene (Karlene) Stellmacher of Tulare, Judy (Rick) Wagner of Tulare, and Janice (Timothy) Robinson of Shawnee, KS.  Herb is also survived by eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers Erwin and Erich Stellmacher, and sister Elsie Feistner.
