WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- Representative Dusty Johnson conducted a pinning ceremony Thursday, at the American Legion Post 17 in Watertown, South Dakota, to honor local Vietnam Veterans for their service.

The event, part of a nationwide initiative to recognize and thank those who served during the Vietnam era, was filled with emotional tributes and heartfelt gratitude.

Representative Johnson emphasized the importance of the ceremony.

He clarified that the ceremony was not about battlefield bravery, but about honoring anyone who served between 1955 and 1975, regardless of their location or role.

Each veteran was presented with a challenge coin, a lapel pin, and a certificate. The lapel pin, a symbol of the nation’s gratitude, features an eagle representing courage, a blue circle symbolizing vigilance, a laurel wreath signifying honor, and six stars representing the United States and its allied nations.

The pin is inscribed with the message, “A Grateful Nation Thanks and Honors You.”

The veterans shared brief stories of their service, some humorous, some emotional. Major General Donald Goldhorn served in the Army in Vietnam and Guam.

Dale Hannash served in the Army from 1968 – 1971 and was an ammunition specialist.

Al Raeder served in the Army and went through the ROTC program in Brookings, South Dakota.

10 Vietnam War Veterans were honored on Thursday.  Representative Johnson emphasized the importance of honoring veterans and acknowledging their sacrifices. He explained that the contributions made by these individuals are a beautiful gift, and he encouraged everyone to recognize that any contributions made today would allow the story of these heroes to continue being told.
