Herman John Jansen was born February 4, 1927, to Johannes Herman and Annetta (Scovall) Jansen in Doland, SD. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Doland High School. After he proposed in kindergarten, Johnny finally married Joyce Hansen on August 20, 1945. Their first son, Jerald, was born February 16, 1946. Three more boys were born: Jene, Jack, and Joel, and a girl, Janelle.

In the fall of 1945, John was called to active duty in WWII and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He served as a clerk and returned following the birth of their first born.

When he returned from active duty, Johnny was the superintendent of bridge construction with Sweetman Construction, so the family moved often.  Their homes included Sioux Falls, New Underwood, Mitchell, Clear Lake, White River, Big Stone City, Huron, and Watertown, SD, as well Hull, IA. Upon his retirement from bridge construction, John was called to the United States Postal Service where he served until he was 80 years old.

John and Joyce were members of the Good Sam Camping Club where he was president of the South Dakota division.  They loved to travel in their RV, which led them to numerous destinations to see family, friends, and beautiful sights.  He loved gardening and canning all kinds of fruits and vegetables. If John was not in his garden, he was busy making pies. John was an active member of the Ashton Methodist Church and continued his faithful attendance in Redfield when the church relocated.

John is survived by his children: daughter-in-law Myra (Jansen) Van Baale of Newton, IA; Jene (Melissa) Jansen of Eddy, TX; Jack (Char) Jansen of Ashton, SD; Joel (Gwen) Jansen of Chaska, MN; and Janelle Jansen of Brandon, SD. He is also survived by his brother Veryl Jansen and three sisters: Linda Thiesen; Vallerie (Ronnie) Abernathy; and Cheryl (Dale) Van Zee, as well as 16 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren, and many generations of nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; son Jerald; one brother Roland Jansen; one sister Shirley Hudson; two sisters-in-law: Bernadene (Lloyd) Lewis and Donna (Eugene) Zens; and four brothers-in-law: Kenny Thiesen, Oscar Woodfork, Lyle (Mildred) Hansen, and Lester (Joan) Hansen.
