PIERRE, S.D.(KELO)- South Dakota legislators are jumping on board a plan to prevent what could become a financial nightmare.

For years, the state has used an increasing amount of unclaimed property funds in the general fund of the state budget.

The problem is, that money can be claimed at any time.

The fund totals 1.2-billion dollars this year.

State Treasurer Josh Haeder urged the House Appropriations committee Tuesday morning to pass a measure that gradually decreases the reliance on those funds in the state budgeting process.

The bill was sent to the House floor with a unanimous Appropriations Committee endorsement.

It has already passed unanimously in the state Senate.
