South Dakota Senate defeats SB103(Ban Voting Centers on Election Day)

PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota Senate debated Tuesday SB103 which would ban voting centers from being used on election day.

Prime sponsor of the bill was Senator Tom Pischke of Dell Rapids.  Pischke express concern about how secure electronic pads are.

Pischke also discuss how epoll books slow down vote counts and stated examples.

Pischke also question whether voting centers are constitutional.

Also supporting the bill was Senator John Carley of Piedmont.

A number of Senators spoke out against it.  Among those was Senator Carl Perry of Aberdeen who believes voting centers have proven to be very convenient in Aberdeen.

Senator Majority Leader Jim Mehlhaff of Pierre who voted against the bill in the State Affairs Committee reiterated his stance on the Senate floor.

Mehlhaff offered his interpretation of how the South Dakota Constitution applies to voting centers.

Senator David Wheeler believes counties should be allowed to run their elections and feels the legislature shouldn’t take the issue of local control afraid from them.

Senator Pischke responded by pointing to what Secretary Kristi Noem said during her confirmation hearing dealing with cybersecurity.

The South Dakota Senate defeated the bill on a 22-13 vote.

Brown County uses voting centers on Election Day.
