Joyce I. Arnold, 97, of Faulkton, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Faulkton Senior Living.
Funeral Services will be 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wecota, with Pastor David Otten presiding. Visitation will be one-hour prior. A private burial will take place at a later date in the Faulkton Cemetery.
Joyce was born May 19, 1927, in Faulk County to Clarence “C.W.” and Ella (Nipp) Glanzman. She attended elementary school in Faulk County, high school in Onaka, SD and graduated from Faulkton High School in 1945. She attended Northern State Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught in rural elementary schools in Faulk County for three years.
Joyce was united in marriage to Donald Arnold of Stanley, Iowa on June 1, 1948. Together, they farmed near Onaka, SD and raised four children. In 1985 they retired and moved to Faulkton. Don died on May 7, 1988.
Joyce was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wecota. She was active in LWML, and with all other congregational members participated in the care, growth and development of the Immanuel spiritual community. She was very aware of and grateful for her blessings, particularly the blessings of faith, family, friends, and country.
Joyce served on the Clark Township School Board, the Faulk County School Board, and the Faulk County Hospital Board when the county operated the hospital. She was a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Onaka, SD and a member of the VFW.
After Don’s death in 1988, Joyce traveled on several tour bus trips and enjoyed visiting her sisters in the Midwest. She had several significant excursions with her daughters and grandchildren which led to exaggerated memories that were blown out of proportion at family gatherings.
She was a member of the Faulkton Historical Society, involved in the restoration of the Pickler Mansion and a volunteer tour guide for 24 years. She took pride in her lawn, flowers, and the blooming lilac trees that bordered her property.
She enjoyed watching and participating in sports, was a member of the Lakeside Country Club, an avid golf fan. She bowled with the Tuesday afternoon bowling league. She was always up for playing board games or a card game with a flare of friendly competition. She loved the Minnesota Twins.
Survivors that have shared her life include her daughters and their spouses: Fran (Allen) Aden of Watertown and Gettysburg, Janene (John) Papendick of Aberdeen, and Danella (Brad) Paul of Faulkton; her sister, Elaine Thelen of Lakeview, Colorado; and all her nieces and nephews. Joyce loved her six grandchildren: Alisa, Hilary, Kate, Joe, Ben, and Jamie and 12 great grandchildren: Owen, Claire, Ethan, Dan, Mason, Sawyer, Bennett, Bellamy, Everett, Clara, Denton, Leo and another great grandson expected to arrive in August 2024.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; son, Wallace; parents; four of her five siblings and their spouses: her brothers: Lowell, Gordon (Belva) Glanzman; Sisters: Arlene (Milton) Allbee, Evelyn (Donald) Maassen; her brother-in-law Alan Thelen.
Joyce’s positive approach to life, her steadiness and enthusiasm for learning, her faith and ability to listen without interruption or judgement will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
