House Education Committee send SB198 to 41st day

PIERRE, S.D.(KBRK)- A bill(SB98) to ban cell phones in South Dakota schools failed Monday morning in the state House Education Committee.

District 11 state Sen. Chris Karr, R-Sioux Falls was the bill’s sponsor.

State Education Secretary Joseph Graves testified against the bill.

District 4 state Rep. Dylan Jordan, R-Clear Lake said students need phones to expose teacher wrongdoing.

The committee voted 8-7 to move to the bill to the 41st day, effectively defeating it. An attempt to recall the measure and hoghouse it — re-writting it into an entirely new bill — also failed in committee (on a 7-8 vote).
