Wolves Sweep Lancers; Go 3-1 On Weekend

ABERDEEN, SD (NSUWolves.com) [SAT] – Northern State split its doubleheader today with Dakota Wesleyan, as the Tigers took a 9-3 victory before the Wolves nabbed an 8-0 win in the second game.

GAME ONE: NSU 3, DWU 9

  • NSU’s 9-3 loss to DWU saw the Wolves record three runs, seven hits, two RBIs, three doubles, a stolen base and a double play
  • The Tigers put chalk on the board first in the opening inning by way of a homer from Liliana Arreola, the only run from both teams in the first two innings
  • DWU would once again score in the third, this time four runs off an RBI single, an RBI double, a wild pitch and an RBI
  • Northern State wouldn’t hit pay dirt until the bottom of the sixth inning as Aune Boben sent a drive to right field to send Hailey Cota home right before Alicia Jeanson scored on an error
  • Madi Jones sent one to center on a sacrifice fly to get Boben at the plate for NSU’s final score of the day
  • Tiger junior Elle Feser put the nail in the coffin with a grand slam in the seventh, giving DWU the 9-3 advantage and the game

GAME TWO: NSU 8, DWU 0

  • Northern State took its loss to heart, responding in kind with a dominant 8-0 victory in the second game of the doubleheader, tallying eight runs, nine hits, six RBIs, a double, a home run and three strikeouts from the mound
  • After a three-up, three-down inning from the Wolves’ defense, Jeanson (walked), Boben (single) and Jones (hit by pitch) found themselves on the bases when standout hitter Tevan Bryant stepped up to the plate
  • The senior from Sioux Falls sent a rocket over the right-field fence with two strikes, taking the early 4-0 lead
  • Corina Coppersmith singled right after, but the Wolves were unable to add another run to the board that inning
  • The game would go scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when a Kennedy Boyer single paired with a DWU error brought Kinsley Stover in for a score
  • Two at-bats later, Boben tallied her only double of the evening to center field, sending Boyer and Shayla Warak home and Jeanson to third
  • Bryant ended the game early on a four-ball walk, sending Jeanson home for the second time of the game and earning their fourth victory and their first shutout of the season
  • On the mound, Mckenzie Wanner held strong, notching three strikeouts against 20 batters and allowing just three hits in six innings

GAME ONE: NSU 4, MMU 3

  • The Wolves tallied four runs, six hits, four RBIs, a double, a stolen base and six strikeouts on the mound
  • Both sides were held scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, when the Lancers came alive, tallying three runs and two hits in the half-inning
  • Northern State responded in kind in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs of its own
  • After loading the bases with Alicia Jeanson on third, Aune Boben on second and Eden Ford (pinch runner for Tevan Bryant) on first, Corina Coppersmith sent the ball into the outfield, tallying a double and clearing the bags for the baserunners
  • A single put Sydney Anderson on first, and a sacrifice bunt from Kennedy Boyer advanced the first baseman into scoring position, but a Jeanson flyout and a Boben groundout sent the Wolves back to the dugout for extra innings
  • An error put Madi Jones on first, and a passed ball advanced her to second at the bottom of the eighth before a Bryant single to center sent her to third
  • With Brooke Wolf heading to the bags in place of Bryant and taking second shortly after, Coppersmith earned a walk to load the bags for NSU
  • After Kinsley Stover sent a shot to the outfield and it was snagged by the right fielder, Jones turned on the jets and headed home
  • Though it was a close call between the slide and the tag from Mount Marty’s Makayla Hudson, the call was made and Northern State notched its first win of the outing, 4-3

  • In Northern State’s shutout to round out the doubleheader, the Wolves tallied eight runs, 10 hits, six RBIs, a triple, a double and two strikeouts on the rubber
  • Unlike Game 1, NSU got on the board first and early, with Hailey Cota chalking up a single to send both Boyer and Anderson home for the first runs of the game
  • After earning three outs in four batters in the top of the third, the Wolves continued their run, tallying a game-high four runs in the inning
  • Bryant started at the plate for the Wolves and slated a walk, with Ford once again coming in as a base runner for last week’s NSIC Player of the Week
  • Coppersmith smacked one to left to advance Ford to second before Anderson advanced both on a single
  • A walk chalked NSU’s first runs of the inning, with Ford touching the plate before Cota followed with a single to bring Coppersmith in for another
  • After a fielder’s choice took Anderson out at home, Boben sent one to right field, bringing in Cota and Boyer
  • Northern State notched two more in the fifth to end the game early off a Boben bunt and a throwing error from third base, with Cota and Boyer hitting pay dirt for their second and third times of the game, respectively, winning by way of shutout
