PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota Senate Education Committee heard testimony on SB198. The bill’s title state schools would be required to adopt cell phone use policies during the school day.
Prime sponsor, Senator Chris Karr of Sioux Falls has been researching the issue for two years, and says scientific data shows cell phones cause problems for students.
State Education Secretary Joe Graves agrees cell phones cause harm, but opposed the bill – wanting to leave the decision to local school districts.
After a series of motions didn’t carry, the committee finally decided on a 5-2 vote to send it to the South Dakota Senate floor with no recommendations.
