PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota Senate on Monday debated SB122. The bill as amended would establish the crime of failure to summon aid for a suicide attempt and provide a penalty therefor.
Prime sponsor of the bill was Senator Carl Perry of Aberdeen.
Perry nicknamed this the Josh’s bill and discuss what happened that day.
One senator spoke out opposing the bill was Senator Chris Carr of Sioux Falls who expressed concern this bill could go beyond just suicide.
Senator Amber Hulse of Hot Springs is on the Senate Judiciary Committee who helped Senator Perry with the bill talks about the bill itself is limited to just suicides.
Senator Michael Rohl of Aberdeen initally was opposed to the bill as it was written. Once the bill was amended, he became a supporter but hopes this will help address the issue of mental health especially in rural communities.
Senator Perry delivered the closing comments prior to the vote. He became emotionally encouraging the Senate to pass this bill.
The Senate passed the bill on a 24-9 vote. The bill now head to the South Dakota House of Representatives.
