House State Affairs Committee defer HB1005 to 41st day

PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota House State Affairs Committee heard testimony on HB1005.  The bill provide a sales and use tax exemption for goods and services related to data center operations.

Prime sponsoring the bill was Representative Kent Roe of Watertown.

Roe discuss the economic impact has on the state.

Supporting the bill from the region include Deuel County Commissioner Jay Grabow.  He talks about what the impact on Deuel County.

Applied Digital are looking to build a data center in Toronto which is in Deuel County.  Executive Vice President of Public Affairs Nick Phillips:

Applied has data center up in Ellendale.  Aberdeen Mayor Travis Schaunaman talks about how that has impacted the economy in his city.

A number of residents from the Toronto spoke out against HB1005.  Eric Offerdahl is a volunteer firefighter in Deuel County and talks ab0ut the county will not be ready for the increase workload possible as a result.

Michelle Offerdahl is a fifth generation farmer in Toronto and talks about the negative impact on agriculture.

Zoning Officer for Deuel County, Mary Nosbush question whether this bill is constitutional.

District 3 Representative Brandei Schaefbauer motioned to send this to the 41st day.  She talks about her concerns about the bill.

Another motion was made to send it to the House floor without recommendations.  That was defeated on a 7-5 vote.

The vote to send it to the 41st day effectively defeating the bill was a 9-3 vote.
