Aberdeen man in custody after early Saturday incident

PRESS RELEASE (Aberdeen, SD)

On January 31, 2026, at approximately 5:28 a.m., officers with the Aberdeen Police Department were dispatched to a hotel located in the 2900 block of 6th Avenue SE in reference to a report of a male subject harassing guests and refusing to leave the property.

During the incident, the male brandished a knife toward guests before fleeing on foot prior to law enforcement arrival. Officers were able to identify the suspect, and confirm through hotel surveillance footage, he was in possession of a knife. A coordinated search of the surrounding area, nearby businesses, and residential addresses was conducted. As a precaution, Sanford Hospital was notified that the individual may still be in the area.

At approximately 7:24 a.m., dispatch received a report of a male matching the suspect’s description, who appeared intoxicated and was attempting to steal an item at Kessler’s Grocery. Officers responded and located the individual in the parking lot. The male did not comply with lawful commands. Officers attempted to use multiple less-lethal tools to get him into custody. He fled on foot and entered an unoccupied vehicle that was running in the 400 block of 4th Avenue SE. The suspect drove a short distance before colliding with a parked vehicle. Law enforcement was then able to remove him from the vehicle and take him into custody without further incident.

The suspect was transported to Avera St. Luke’s Hospital for medical clearance prior to booking.
