South Dakota Senate passes SJR502

PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota Senate debated SJR502.  The resolution would use Article V of the U.S. Constitution to be a part of a Convention of States to put in there an amendment to cap the U.S. Supreme Court to nine justices.  If passed, South Dakota would be the first state to call for a convention to cap the Supreme Court at nine.

Prime Sponsor Michael Rohl talks about this was something Democrats wanted to expand in 2021.

Senator Rohl believes that if the U.S. Senate eliminates the filibuster, that this could lead to the expansion of the courts.

Senator Jamie Smith of Sioux Falls explains why Democrats did what they did in 2021.

Senator Rohl explains the process of Article V of the Constitution.

South Dakota Senate passed the resolution on a 24-10 vote.  This now moves on to the South Dakota House.
