PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- On Friday, the South Dakota Senate State Affairs Committee heard testimony on SJR501. The resolution propose and submit to the voters at the next general election an amendment to the Constitution of the State of South Dakota, limiting the number of terms an individual may serve as a member of the Legislature.
Prime sponsor was District 1 Senator Michael Rohl.
Rohl explains why he believes in a maximum number of consecutive years should be sixteen years in the legislature.
Opposing the resolution was Matthew Bogue of the South Dakota Farm Bureau as he explains the organization are not a believer in term limits in general.
Bill Van Camp, lobbyist for the South Dakota Retailers Association, talks about their group’s opposition to this.
Senator Rohl refuted statements made by the opposition.
District 3 Senator Carl Perry is on the committee and he expressed why he believes this proposal is a bad idea.
The Senate State Affairs Committee passed the resolution on a 6-3 vote. It now heads to the South Dakota Senate floor.
