Aberdeen, SD – at approximately 6:30 pm on January 9, 2026, Aberdeen Fire Rescue was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 10 block of 17th Avenue SW in Aberdeen. Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke coming from the two-unit residential building.
Two adult occupants were able to exit the building safely prior to the fire department arriving on scene.
The fire was quickly located in the basement by firefighters and contained to the basement of the structure. There was major fire, smoke and water damage to the basement and significant smoke damage to the remainder of the residence. One pet died as result of the fire. Fire crews were on scene for about two hours. The fire has been ruled accidental. As a safety reminder, do not leave cooking unattended.
Do not remove smoke detectors and ensure smoke detectors have fresh batteries and test them regularly to ensure that they are working properly.
