Recap of work session addressing water & sewage rates

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- On Monday night, the Aberdeen City Council held a work session addressing both water and sewer rates for the city over the next five years.  The council heard the report from Tanya Miller & Jessica Weinkauf(Wine-koff) both from Banner Associates based out of Sioux Falls.  They do have offices in the Aberdeen area.

Water:

Miller discuss why the study was done so soon after doing one in 2024.

Miller talks about what percentage is used by both the residents and the businesses.

Miller was asked if the 60-40 ratio between business and residence is comparable to elsewhere in the state.

Weinkauf went over the goals of this study.  She discuss wanting the department to be self funded.

Another goal was setting a reserve fund for water.

Weinkauf discuss another goal is covering the 1.1 coverage ratio.

Weinkauf talked about two options to consider.

Sewer:

Miller discuss the different customer classes there are in the city.

Miller talks about ordinances in place in Aberdeen that could impact the sewer rates.

Miller goes over some of the rates going forward.

Weinkauf talks about the rates they would recommend for the next five years determined by two options.  Here’s option 1:

Option 2:

Miller recommends the city council to go with option 1 to determine rates for both water and sewer.

They also recommend to do studies on these rates every three to five years.
