Laverne was born on September 30, 1938, to Samuel and Maggie (Fischer) Kiesz in Eureka, SD. She grew up and attended school in Eureka, graduating from Eureka High School. She continued her education at the School of Commerce, where she studied stenography. Laverne worked in various law offices and later at Hub City before moving to Connecticut in 1981. While living there, she was employed as a hostess for a bus line for several years. After returning to Aberdeen, she worked as a secretary for Nancy Vostad and, lastly, Thorpe Realty.

Laverne loved to sing. She was strong in her faith and attended Church of God Seventh Day, Calvary Baptist Church, and most recently, Aberdeen First Assembly. She enjoyed traveling and often made trips to support her nieces and nephews at their ball games and activities. Laverne was always organized and took great joy in planning special events. She was caring, charismatic, and friendly, with a sparkle that never dimmed. She loved her family deeply, and her dogs, Moe and Chevy, held a special place in her heart.

Grateful for having shared Laverne’s life are her sister, Vi Kost; nephew, Todd (Sandy) Kost; niece, Candy Dykema; and great-nieces and nephews: Chandler (Ashley) Kost, Austin Kost, Brittany (Jake) Pender, Chase (Tia) Dykema, and Taylor (Kristen) Dykema.

Preceding Laverne in death are her parents, Samuel & Maggie Kiesz.
