ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- Back in July, Aberdeen city workers voted to form a new union addressing concerns such as wages, benefits, and to give a voice on the job.
On Monday night, the Aberdeen City Council approved a three year agreement with that labor union.
Aberdeen City Attorney Ron Wager(Wag-er) discuss how this came about.
Aberdeen City Manager Dave McNeil went over the process between the city and the labor union,
McNeil released the following statement:

A summaryof the material negotiated terms includes:
– Establishes the parties’ collectively bargained rights and obligations for the duration of the
three-year contract.
– Makes necessary salary grid adjustments consistent with the 2024 wage study. The study’s
market wage adjustments were intended to fairly compensate the City’s employees and
promote the recruitment and retention of public service employees in the current competitive
hiring environment.
– Provides for input from union members regarding market wage adjustments and incentives.
– Secures “just cause” status for the union members and a process to grieve disciplinary
matters.
– Improves communications by establishing a committee to discuss labor and management
issues and secures the employees’ participation on the City’s safety, insurance, and benefits
committees.
– Establishes overtime compensatory time provisions.
– Provides for fair compensation of on-call employees.
– Recognizes the unique nature of snow removal operations and secures fair conditions for the
parties during such operations.
