Members of Medical Marijuana Oversight Committee critical of SD Dept of Health Secretary

PIERRE, S.D.(KBRK)- During a hearing Tuesday, the state Legislature’s Medical Marijuana Oversight Committee scolded State Health Secretary Melissa Magstadt for her department’s slow reporting.

Republican State Senator John Carley of Piedmont said back in July the committee asked the department for hospital inspection reports and records on marijuana exposures requiring hospitalization. He said fifteen minutes into the committee meeting, that information was finally emailed to them.

Committee chair Republican Representative Josephine Garcia of Watertown said this erodes trust.

Magstadt said preparing accurate reports takes time.

The committee oversees South Dakota’s medical marijuana program, approved by voters in 2020 and implemented by the state starting in 2022.
