MELLETTE, S.D. (Press Release) — A Spink County deputy has been injured while assisting a pedestrian Wednesday morning.
The deputy had pulled onto the south shoulder of Highway 20, four miles east of Mellette, to assist a pedestrian standing in the north ditch around 7:30 a.m.
A 32-year-old driver reduced speed and moved into the west lane to give the patrol car more room. Upon seeing the deputy, the driver swerved but struck the deputy.
The deputy was able to call for help and was transported to an Aberdeen hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash is still under investigation.
