Walton Johnson, 93

Britton, SD: The funeral service for Walton W. Johnson will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2025 at Rose Hill Church, rural Langford with Pastor Mike Honl officiating. Burial will be in the Britton Cemetery with full military honors.

 

Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, October 31, 2025 at Olson Funeral Chapel of Britton.

 

Walton W. Johnson was born September 8, 1932 to Harvey and Lena (Mary Magdalena Herr) Johnson in Oakes, ND. He grew up on the family farm in Marshall County. At an early age farming, family, and faith were instilled as core values. He attended country school in his younger years, and later graduated from Webster High School. Following graduation, he starting farming. He answered the call to serve his country and entered the Army in October of 1955, and was honorably discharged in July of 1957. While enlisted he received the Good Conduct Medal.

 

On June 20, 1959 Walton was united in marriage to Marlys E. Smith. They made their home on the Johnson farm in rural Britton where they raised their three children. The same core values of farming, family and faith were continued on to his children and he took great pride in his family.

 

Walton was a dedicated farmer and true lover of the land. He earned the Outstanding Young Farmer award for his dedication over the years for farming and raising cattle. If Walton wasn’t out working, you could find him at the kitchen table reading a farm magazine, watching the news, or talking to his boys about farming. He always had a story to tell or farm information to share. Never one to slow down, as there was always work to be done, he was always ready to hop in the pickup and drive somewhere for parts, to look at machinery or go to the bull sales. He was on SD State Electric Board and was a member of the Upper Crow Creek Board and served as chairman. Walton was also a 4-H leader in Marshall County and a member of the Marshall County Conservation Board.

 

Faith was a strong pillar in Walton’s life. He had a true servant’s heart and was always willing to help others. He was a member of Rose Hill Church where he served in numerous positions over the years and willing to partake in all aspects of the church.

 

He and Marlys loved supporting their grandchildren and going to their events. They looked forward to attending Northern State basketball games. Walton was always up for a “ball game” in the rec room with his grandkids. Walton was a Minnesota Twins fans. He also enjoyed watching car races. Walton enjoyed golfing and golfed in the Country Club League for a number of years. He also enjoyed hunting each season and had a true respect for the animals and the land.

 

Walton passed away Sunday, October 26, 2025 at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol, at the age of 93.

 

Grateful to have shared his life are his two sons: Roger (Judy) Johnson and Ronald (Brenda) Johnson of Britton; a daughter: Candace (Jeff) Kittilson of West Fargo, ND; three grandchildren: Lance (Tia) Johnson of Pelican Rapids, MN, Lindsey Johnson of West Fargo, ND and Derek Kittilson of West Fargo, ND; four great-grandchildren: Noa, Emmett, Berit and Elsie Johnson of Pelican Rapids; and one sister-in-law, Melva Johnson of Fargo, ND.

 

Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Delores; his brother, Donald; and a brother-in-law, Stanley Thompson.
