PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- It began as a letter to South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden asking him to clean up the South Dakota Department of Corrections on Monday. It’s led to Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko’s resignation. That letter authored in part by District 24 Representative Will Mortenson.
Twenty House members including Mortenson put their names to the letter which also raised concerns about the money being used to possibly build a prison near Sioux Falls.
Wasko announced her resignation Tuesday, effective October 20th. Mortenson says that should help those lawmakers who signed the letter with their confidence in the D-O-C.
Mortenson says the concerns had been previously been discussed privately for months before the public statement just weeks before a special session to consider building the prison.
