South Dakota Farm Bureau address property taxes at DakotaFest

MITCHELL, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- On Tuesday, the South Dakota Farm Bureau addressed property taxes at the 2025 DakotaFest held in Mitchell.

Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal talked about the theme of the forum.

The panel consisted of SD Department of Revenue Secretary Michael Houdyshell, Executive Director of the South Dakota Retailers Association Nathan Sanderson, and former legislator Mary Duvall.

Houdyshell discuss how the state and county raise revenue needed to do their budgets.

Sanderson went over the figures produced by these taxes.

Duvall discuss the role the SD Legislature play in setting guidelines for how counties spend their money.

Sanderson discuss three ways that property taxes could be cut.  The first way to shift how taxes are paid in.

The second way is to cut spending on programs on the county and city level.

The third way is to replace it with another source of revenue.

Houdyshell talk about ways that citizens can get help addressing property taxes.

Houdyshell also addressed what the legislature passed this year(SB216) to address property taxes.

Duvall talked about the pending amendment that would replace property taxes with a transaction tax.

Duvall provided an example.

Houdyshell recommend the best way to get involve in the process is to attend city and county meetings dealing with budgeting.

South Dakota Farmers Union will address property taxes at the South Dakota State Fair on Saturday, August 30th.
