WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- The Watertown City Council has approved the renewal of the city’s annual insurance policies, despite a 13% premium increase from the previous year. The approval covers a range of policies, including general liability, auto liability, property damage, and equipment breakdown.

City Chief Financial Officer Kristen Bobzien explained the premium increase, amounting to approximately $101,000.

Councilman Michael Heuer raised a question about the process, asking if the city regularly seeks bids from other insurance providers.

Councilman Heuer and Councilman Kyle Peters expressed the view that the 13% increase was significant enough to warrant exploring other options.

Councilman Jurrens, however, offered a counterpoint, given that he works in the private sector insurance industry.

Ultimately, the council approved the motion to renew the policies and authorize payment. They also directed staff to explore the possibility of seeking bids for next year’s renewal, with a plan to begin the process earlier, likely in May or June, to allow for more time to review. The motion passed with a roll call vote.
