Mary Josephine Lamberty was born to Vincent Lamberty and Johanna (Geraets) Lamberty on a farm in Dell Rapids, SD, in the middle of a snowstorm on December 4, 1940. She was the fourth child in the family, with four more to follow. Mary Jo attended St. Mary School in Dell Rapids until the family moved to Willow Lake, SD. She went to school there, graduating in 1958.
In the fall of 1958, Mary Jo started classes toward a two-year degree in elementary education at Presentation College. Afterward, she taught in Hitchcock, SD, and Miller, SD. While teaching in Hitchcock, she met her future husband, Bill Hild. They married on June 8, 1961. Eventually, they moved to Ortonville, MN, where Bill taught, and to Hector, MN, where Bill served as the elementary school principal. From there, the family relocated to Aberdeen, SD, where Bill was the principal at Henry Neill Elementary School, and later, he returned to the classroom as a teacher at OM Tiffany Elementary School. During this time, Mary Jo was a stay-at-home mom.
Mary Jo eventually went back to college and obtained her B.S. in elementary education at Northern State College. She taught in the Aberdeen school system for 14 years, all of them at Howard Hedger Elementary School. Upon retiring, she became active in many community and church activities.
Bill and Mary Jo enjoyed traveling on bus trips, seeing most states. Eventually, health concerns kept them from going as often as they would have liked, but they were able to do what they wanted.
Surviving Mary Jo is her husband, Bill, of 64 years; daughter Kim (Greg) Hanson; son Bill Jr.; granddaughter Elizabeth (Matt) Collins; grandson Nicholas (Hailey) Hanson; and great-grandson, Tristyn Collins; brothers Ron (Shar) Lamberty, and Gary (Renae) Lamberty; sister Sheila Terry; and sisters-in-law Susan Foster, Carolyn Lamberty, and Jean Himes.
Preceding Mary Jo’s death were her parents, Vincent and Johanna Lamberty, step-mother, Mary Lamberty, and brothers Jim, Bob, Fr. Darrell, and Paul.
