PIERRE, S.D.(KELO)- Some hard decisions ahead.
That’s the caution offered by state Senator Ernie Otten.
He co-chairs the legislature’s appropriations committee and says the upcoming ten percent cut in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families won’t be the last difficult decision the committee faces.
There are about 25-hundred South Dakota families on the Temporary Assistance program.
They currently receive just over 550-dollars per month to help make ends meet.
For a second straight year, South Dakota legislators are dealing with falling sales tax revenues following several years of plenty.
Those revenues are the driver for the state budget.
Economist Derek Johnson of the Bureau of finance and Management briefed the appropriations committee on the latest numbers.
At the same time, federal funding is being reduced, so the committee has its hands full dealing with the impact.
If revenues continue to fall and go too far, the legislature will have to consider revising the budget.
