South Dakota Department of Health report first death due to West Nile Virus

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELOLAND) – A death due to the West Nile virus (WNV) has been reported in South Dakota.

The South Dakota Department of Health (SDDOH) wrote in a press release that as of July 23, in South Dakota, there have been three human cases in Brookings, Marshall and Spink County.

Of these three cases, one person ended up dying due to the virus. It was not specified in which county the deadly case occurred.

According to the press release, there is one human viremic blood donor (blood tested positive for WNV, despite person not displaying symptoms at time of blood donation) in Brown County.

SDDOH reports that seven counties have mosquito pools positive for West Nile: Beadle, Brown, Brookings, Codington, Hughes, Lincoln, and Minnehaha.

The West Nile virus prediction model projects that the total number of cases for SD in 2025 could potentially be as high as 134 cases, ranking SD and other states in “outbreak” territory.

On their website, the SDDOH has more information on WNV prevention, mosquito control, and laboratory services.
