BRANDON, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – One year ago, Brandon Valley Post 131 ended the season of the Aberdeen Smittys at Fossum Field. History repeated itself on Thursday, this time from Brandon, as Post 131 won the best of three series against Aberdeen, winning game one 5-4 in a nail biter & bouncing the Smittys from the super-regional, 4-1 in game two.
The Smittys got off to a great start on offense in game one, as was their custom this last weekend against Sturgis & Spearfish – the Smittys got on the board with two outs. With runners on second & third with Aberdeen down to their final strike in the inning, Grant Beyer laced a two out two run double to left center field & an early 2-0 lead.
Unfortunately for the visitors, Post 131 would even things up in the bottom of the frame; Brandon Valley would add three more over the next few innings & take a 5-2 lead into the 6th. Joe Cogley would plate Grant Beyer on a sac fly to deep left field, to trim the deficit to 5-3. Once again, with two on and two out, Karson Borge would plate Levi Hoffman on a poke to right field & Aberdeen would trail 5-4, but that would be as close as they’d get.
Bennett Eisenbeisz went six innings, took the loss, after scattering nine hits, five earned runs and a strikeout. Grant Beyer went 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Karson Borge went 3-4 with a run scored and a run knocked in.
Game two, the Smittys trailed 1-0 after the first inning & Aberdeen’s offense wouldn’t cross home plate until the bottom of the 6th inning. Jehiel Aviles hit the gas trying to steal third base & an errant throw by the Brandon catcher saw the ball trickle past the third baseman & Aviles would score – that’d be the only run Aberdeen could muster in game two, as the Smittys were only held to two hits in game two.
Both teams struggled in the field, committing four errors each. Michael Dutenhoffer was dialed in on the bump, going six innings and scattering four hits, three runs (none of them earned) & he also struc out eight Post 131 batters.
With the doubleheader loss, the Smittys wrap up the summer of ’25 with a final record of 12-26.
