The graveside service for Irene Nieuwsma, 96, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00pm, Friday, July 25, 2025, at Morningside Cemetery, Roscoe, SD, with Pastor D. Thomas Rawerts officiating. Irene died Monday, July 21, at Prairie Heights Healthcare in Aberdeen, SD.

Irene Viola Voegele was born on a farm near Hosmer, SD, on May 12, 1929, to John B. and Pauline (Pleines) Voegele. She was Baptized at Hosmer Lutheran Church on June 16, 1929, by Rev. H. Streeb. She attended rural school.
In 1945 Irene was united in marriage to Edwin Martz. They moved to a farm northwest of Roscoe, SD. Two daughters were born to this union, Janice Joyce (Martz) Mohr and Victoria Lynn (Martz) Miller. Irene taught Sunday and Saturday school for 10 years. She then worked as a cook in the café. Edwin passed away in 1979.
Irene married John J. Nieuwsma in 1984. They lived in Hull, ND, until John passed away on March 3, 2012.
Irene was a wonderful baker and was known for her kuchen and bread. She always saved recipes that she thought would be good. Irene earned her GED after Edwin passed away.
Grateful for having shared Irene’s life are her two daughters, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, one brother, one sister, one sister-in-law, seven stepchildren, and sixteen step grandchildren.
Preceding Irene in death are her parents, her husbands, five brothers, and one sister.
