ABERDEEN, S.D. (Press Release)
Children with and without hearing impairments, along with their families, are invited on Saturday, July 12 at 10 AM to K.O. Lee Aberdeen Public Library to experience American Sign Language (ASL) through a special interactive story time. Timeless children’s picture books will be read in both spoken English and ASL, followed by a craft, with children writing and decorating their names using the ASL Alphabet! Each child will leave the event with a brand-new book purchased by the Aberdeen Sertoma Club!
American Sign Language (ASL) isn’t just a language. It’s a beautiful and moving form of expression, allowing thousands of people across the United States to effectively communicate with one another and the outside world. And sign language isn’t just beneficial to those in the Deaf community. It can be used to help infants and toddlers express their needs as well!
Celebrating American Sign Language: An Interactive Storytime is part of this year’s observance of the 35th Anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act. Since its signing, the act has been instrumental in eliminating the discrimination of people with disabilities in the United States, paving the way for them to lead rich and fulfilling lives within the wider community. The event is a partnership between K.O. Lee Aberdeen Public Library, the Aberdeen Sertoma Club and the Mayor’s Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities.
For more information about this event please contact Library Director Anna Moser or visit the library website at https://aberdeen.sd.us/library.
