BRITTON, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – The Aberdeen Smittys pitching staff turned in a fantastic Sunday of baseball and the offense cranked it up, when needed & picked up three wins in three outings at the Britton U17 Tournament. Defeating Platte-Geddes 2-1 to open the day, run ruling Milbank 15-0 & then doubling up the host squad, 10-5 to wrap up the evening.
Against Platte-Geddes, the Smittys trailed 1-0 after the second inning, but would strike back with single tallies in the third & fourth innings respectively and take a 2-1 advantage and that’s all they’d need behind their strong pitching performance. Joran Foss picked up the win, going five strong innings and only surrendering a pair of hits, while striking out seven and only walking one. At the dish, Karson Borge was perfect, going 3-3 with a run scored & a run driven in. Lance Siefken also delivered the other RBI in the one run win.
In the second game of the day against the Milbank 17U team, the Smittys put together their most complete team performance of the season. Striking early & often and dominating Milbank to the tune of a 15-0 win & out-hitting Milbank 16-1. Aberdeen scored in every inning, with a knockout punch of seven runs in the top of the sixth. Michael Dutenhoffer went all but one of the six innings and his command was superb, fanning seven batters and walking none. On offense, everybody had at least one hit; Jehiel Aviles went a perfect 4-4 with three runs scored & two runs driven in. Karson Borge was 2-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Just for good measure, Jaxon Ladner went 3-4, touched home plate twice and drove in four.
In the final game of the weekend, the Smittys defeated the Britton Lumberjacks 10-5. Britton struck first in the bottom of the first, but that lead would be short-lived. Aberdeen responded with three in the second and never trailed for the rest of the game. Grant Beyer earned the win on the rubber, going three innings and scattering four hits, two runs, one of them being earned and striking out four. Joe Cogley went 2-2 with two runs scored and three runs driven in. Ridley Waldo & Joran Foss both drove in a pair in the five run victory.
After their last 17 games away from Fossum Field (with last Thursday’s game being canceled) they’ll finally return to the Hub City for home games (weather permitting) on Wednesday against Pierre Legion Post 8 for a doubleheader at 4/6p on HubCityRadio.com with Ryan Martin on the call, presented by Culvers of Aberdeen.
