SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- Tuesday was the first meeting of a summer study involving incarceration and reentry and comparing it other states in the region.

Co-Chairs of this committee are District 16 Senator Kevin Jensen and District 12 Representative Greg Jamison.

Jensen previews what this summer study is designed to do.

Jamison discuss the states they chose to compare themselves to and explains why.

Jamison discuss prison population between South Dakota and North Dakota and Montana.

Jamison breaks down the percentages of inmates by crimes.

Another member of the committee who has experience with the penal system and pushed for this summer study is Representative Jeff Bathke of District 20.

One concern brought up was a lack of counselors in the system. Bathke addressed that.

Also a member of this committee is District 3 Senator Carl Perry and he asked how GPS could play a factor.

Perry also brought up Step Up Ministries and the role they have played with prison inmates in Aberdeen.

Jensen followed that up with the idea of finding work rehab in the prison system that can help them once they return to society.

The committee is scheduled to meet again later on this summer.
