WATERTOWN, S.D.(KWAT) – The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources has confirmed the presence of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) within the Watertown city limits. The invasive beetle was discovered by City forestry staff during a routine inspection and verified by EAB experts at South Dakota State University.

The Emerald Ash Borer is a destructive pest that targets ash trees by burrowing beneath the bark, disrupting the tree’s ability to move water and nutrients. Once infested, most trees die within two to four years. With an estimated 6,400 ash trees on public property and thousands more on private property in Watertown, the potential impact is significant.

“While we are disappointed with the news and the impact it will have, it is not entirely unexpected,” said Dusty Rodiek, Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Director. “For several years the Parks and Forestry Division has been taking proactive steps by removing nearly 800 Ash trees in anticipation of the inevitable arrival of EAB. We are now shifting to the reactive phase of our Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan.”

Residents are encouraged to assess trees on private property for signs of infestation—such as thinning leaves, bark cracks, and D-shaped exit holes. Woodpecker activity may also increase as they feed on EAB larvae.

Property owners are responsible for treating or removing all ash trees located on their private property.
