Julia Diane Bruse was born on October 27, 1936, in Aberdeen, SD, to Shirley and Lenore (McCulloch) Emery. She was raised in Barnard, SD, where she graduated high school in May 1954. On August 17, 1956, Judie married Boyd “Chico” Bruse in Barnard, SD. Together, they made their home in Aberdeen, SD, where they raised their four children: Doug, Debbie, Lori, and Jeff, and built a life together.
Judie was a dedicated and valued employee throughout her career, working at Aberdeen Publishing, Dr. Hanley’s office, and eventually Malchow’s, where she found a job she loved, and a workplace that felt like family. She retired from Malchow’s with many fond memories and lasting friendships. Judie moved to Volga, SD, where she helped care for Chico. After his passing, she returned to Aberdeen before entering the nursing home in Groton, SD.
Judie had a passion for sports, faithfully cheering on the Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Green Bay Packers (thanks to Chico’s influence), and was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves. She kept meticulous game records in her beloved notebooks and rarely missed a chance to watch her teams play. Beyond sports, Judie enjoyed bowling and reading and was a proud and active member of the Moose. On Friday nights, you often find her at the Brown County Speedway, one of her favorite places. Judie deeply cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought light and laughter into her life.
Grateful to have shared Judie’s journey are her four children: Doug (Kathy) Bruse of Aberdeen, SD, Debbie (Tim) Jung of Volga, SD, Lori (Gary) Reis of Bath, SD, and Jeff (Shelia) Bruse of Aberdeen, SD. She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Amber (Michael) Biegler of Omaha, NE, Kelsey (Anthony) Scarborough of Mansfield, SD, Samantha (Michael Redenbaugh) Jung of Sioux Falls, SD, Taylor (Avery) Gilchrist of Sioux Falls, SD, Trevor Bruse of Aberdeen, SD, Lyndsey Bruse of Aberdeen, SD, and Joann Moffenbier of Aberdeen, SD; six great-grandchildren: Trey, Tate, Tyce, and Kenna Scarborough, Porter and Kennedy Biegler; her sister Maryann (Melvin) Schaunaman; and a sister-in-law Joyce Emery.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chico; her parents, Shirley and Lenore Emery; and her brothers, Darrell Emery and Bernard Emery.
