James Hancock, 96

James “Jim” Hancock, 96, of Miller and formerly of Ree Heights, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller.

A Celebration of Life for Jim will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the Ree Heights Auditorium. Fellowship and a meal will follow the celebration.

Jim was born on January 5, 1928, to Ernest and Mary (Felkey) Hancock on the family farm in Rock Dale Township. He attended school through the eighth grade. He married Elsie Jones, and together they lived on the family farm until 1963 when they moved to Ree Heights. Over the years, Jim worked on his dad’s family farm, and various other jobs before running a municipal sewer cleaning service. He was proud to be a 52-year member of Alcoholics Anonymous, a milestone that meant a great deal to him.

One of Jim’s greatest joys was playing cards, particularly pinochle. He was always ready for a game, playing anytime, anywhere, and with anyone—often for just a dollar. He also cherished his lifelong friendship with the Millerdale Colony and always enjoyed their visits.

Jim is survived by his eleven children: Mike Hancock of San Antonio, TX; Ruth (Alan) Jockheck of Pierre; Maurice (Wanda) Hancock of Downs, KS; Jerry (Evalyn) Hancock of Laquey, MO; Rose (Warren) Nelson of Rapid City; Sheila Hancock of Miller; Earl Hancock of Ree Heights; Susie (Joe) Bryant of Halstead, KS; Mary Hancock of Eureka, KS; Jill (Dan) Sullivan of Virginia Beach, VA; and Jack (Rosemary) Hancock of Chattanooga, TN. He leaves behind 26 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elsie; four brothers; and three sisters.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Jim’s arrangements.
