Aberdeen Police Department respond to incident on South Roosevelt Street Sunday

ABERDEEN, S.D.(Press Release)- On Sunday at about 2:00 pm, officers from the Aberdeen Police Department and Deputies from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of the 1100 block of South Roosevelt St. in reference to a welfare check on an individual in a vehicle with a weapon. On arrival officers established a containment area and implemented crisis communications operators.

Several streets were blocked and the public was asked to stay away from the area for a period of time. At some point the individual left the containment area and drove into rural Brown County. Officers continued observing and communicating with the individual for over five hours. On 5/4/25 in the early evening, the individual died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot.

The Agencies that were involved in this incident included the Aberdeen Police Department, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, The Spink County Sheriff’s Office, Aberdeen Fire and Rescue, Brown County Emergency Management, and Brown County Communications.
