Tyler Birney, 45

Tyler “Ty” Birney, 45, of Ortley, passed away, Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.

Funeral services will be 2:00pm, Sunday, May 4, 2025 at the Waubay School Gymnasium and will be livestreamed via our Facebook page. Interment will be at the Ortley Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-7pm, Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Ortley Free Lutheran Church in Ortley.

Tyler Rex Birney was born on March 26, 1980, to Rex and Jacqueline (Roberts) Birney at Watertown, South Dakota. The family made their home in Ortley and attended Ortley Free Lutheran Church. Ty attended school in Waubay, graduating in 1998. He furthered his education, obtaining his master’s degree in integrated technology.

Ty worked at Dakota Magic Casino as a surveillance agent and later at Indian Health Services in their IT department and currently as the safety officer.

Ty was a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribe, an OG of Toka Nuwan District. He was always the life of the party! He enjoyed going to movies and concerts, reading, and writing stories, even belonging to a writing club. He loved the Philadelphia Eagles, cooking his famous scalloped corn for every holiday get together, and hosting cook outs for his family and friends. Family was his world, and he will be deeply missed by each of them.

Ty passed away, Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at Watertown, South Dakota, at the age of 45 years, 1 month, and 4 days.

He will be forever loved by his father Rex Birney of Ortley, SD, brother Jamie (Sarah) Birney of Fargo, ND, and sister Danielle (Cody) Hinkelman of Watertown, South Dakota. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Lindsey, Blu, Layne, Mason, and Essence, as well as many aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends. Ty was welcomed to heaven by his mother Jacqueline, grandparents, nephew, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
