Eva C. Burckhard was born in Aberdeen, SD, on October 31, 1934, to Raymond and Anna (Herle) Burckhard. She was raised in Aberdeen and attended St. Mary’s parochial school.  After school, she was employed at St. Luke’s Hospital, Newberry’s, and The Minute Lunch.

Eva was united in marriage to Harley Gage on April 11, 1953, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen.  The couple met at the roller rink at the Brown County Fairgrounds.  They lived in Washington State for two years while Harley served in the United States Army. The couple then returned to live at the family farm in Westport, SD.

Eva was a homemaker who was known for being a wonderful cook and baker.  She loved gardening and had flowers blooming all season long.  She worked on the farm with Harley, doing various chores and raising chickens.  Eva spent many years in the Bide-A-Wee Extension Club as well as serving in the Sacred Heart Altar Society of Westport, where she also taught Catechism.  Eva and Harley also enjoyed square dancing, bowling, and card club with friends.  They made many trips around the country visiting family.  Eva loved painting ceramics and was known for her extensive Santa Claus collection.  Her grandchildren will always remember taking long walks on the gravel roads and going to ceramics with her.

Blessed to have shared in Eva’s life are three children: Kathy (Allan) Peck of Westport, SD, David Gage of Westport, SD, and Christine Stremick of Le Mars, IA; two grandchildren: Jennifer (Jance) Miller of Aberdeen, and Gage (Elizabeth) Hadden-Peck of Roseville, MN; five great-grandchildren, Hunter Miller, Conner Miller, Finn Hadden-Peck, Ilsa Hadden-Peck, and Greta Hadden-Peck; one sister, Frances Jackson of Perry, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Primrose Cottages for the wonderful care Eva received while there.
