WASHINGTON, D.C.(Northern Plains News)- South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds and Michigan Senator Gary Peters have introduced a bill to extend a critical cybersecurity law that expires in September.
The bipartisan legislation would renew the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act for another decade.
The law protects businesses that share information about cyber threats with the government.
Without this protection, experts warn that companies may stop reporting cyber-attacks, leaving consumers and critical infrastructure more vulnerable to data breaches.
The existing law has helped defend against major cyber incidents, including attacks on infrastructure systems that South Dakotans rely on daily.
Rounds says allowing the law to lapse would “significantly weaken our cybersecurity ecosystem.”
