In his address, the Mayor pushed city leaders to think big in order to keep growth and development rolling.
With all the talk about reducing taxes, he admits it will be challenging to consider projects like The Riverline District and a new convention center.
But, he says without projects like that, there will be a price to pay.
The State of the City is strong…but there are headwinds.
Mayor Paul TenHaken says among the challenges,..federal and state budget cuts and a new property tax relief plan that will cost the city about 25-million dollars a year.
The city has 180-million worth of road projects being launched this year, and is working to complete a 250-million dollar waste water treatment plant.
He says those projects are critical to future city growth.
Among the numbers he’s excited about are those dealing with crime.
There were fewer than 40 property crimes per one-thousand residents last year…the lowest since before the pandemic.
And, despite a record number of homicides, violent crime was also down per capita.
One set of numbers of concern…declining sales and property tax revenues that could eat a hole in future city budgets.
