SD Department of Corrections report death in South Dakota State Penitentiary

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KWAT)–A man serving two life sentences for murder in Codington County has died while in custody at the South Dakota Penitentiary.

Seventy seven year-old Steven Satter died in the Jameson Annex of the prison on Monday.

In April 1973, the decomposed bodies of the two men Satter killed, Jerry Bowling and Kent Engle, were found buried under a rock pile south of Kranzburg.

Both had been shot in the head.

The shootings happened in August 1972 at a trailer home near Lake Pelican.

Satter testified in his own defense at his trial saying he had committed a number of burglaries in South Dakota and Minnesota with the two men he killed, and that the shootings were in self-defense.

In 1976, his conviction was upheld by the South Dakota Supreme Court.
